Welcome, Kimberly Parker
RN, BSN, CEN, CFRN Professor of Paramedic/EMT Clinical Coordinator
What is your role at Merced College?
As a Professor of Paramedic/EMT, I instruct students in both theoretical and practical aspects of emergency medical services, covering topics like patient assessment, emergency procedures, and medical ethics. As the Clinical Coordinator, I oversee clinical placements for students, ensuring they receive hands-on experience in real-world settings, such as hospitals or ambulances. I work with local healthcare providers, agencies, and organizations to facilitate student training and ensure alignment with industry needs.
What part of your job do you enjoy most?
In a role like that of a paramedic and EMT professor and clinical coordinator, many find the most rewarding part to be the opportunity to make a direct impact on students’ lives. Watching them grow from novice learners into competent professionals can be incredibly fulfilling. Additionally, the hands-on training aspect, where students gain real-world experience and develop their skills, often brings a lot of joy. Finally, being part of a community that values emergency care and seeing students succeed in their careers can be deeply gratifying. I love when my students get that “aha” moment and are able to put all the pieces of their learning together and are able to accel.
Tell us about yourself. What brought you to Merced College?
I was born and raised in Merced. My husband and I moved up to the Sacramento area in 2001. We had the opportunity to return to Merced in 2021. I am a graduate of Merced College and used this start to excel in my career. I was given the opportunity to put my 21 years of nursing experience and skills to use and started teaching in the Paramedic and EMT program in 2023. I have loved it ever since.
How do you see your work or your role evolving in the next few years?
As technology advances, there will likely be an increased focus on incorporating simulation-based training and telemedicine into the curriculum. We recognize of the importance of mental health in emergency care, which is leading to more training on dealing with psychological aspects of emergencies. With remote education continually evolving, we already offer a hybrid model for our Paramedic program, making education more accessible. I see our program growing and evolving to incorporate other certificate programs. We want our community to thrive and offer jobs and opportunities to the residents.
What do you like to do outside of work?
Outside of work, I enjoy a variety of activities that help me recharge and find balance. I enjoy paddle boarding, spending time with family and friends, and exploring new places with my husband and family. My husband and I started traveling to a different state each year for our anniversary. So far, we have been to 25 different states for our anniversary trips. I also enjoy Pilates, Peloton workouts and yoga. These are great ways to stay healthy and unwind.
