Dear Merced College Colleagues,
As we move into the heart of the fall semester, I am filled with excitement and pride for the innovations and stories that are defining the spirit of our district. Our first Blue Devil’s Advocate of the 2024-25 academic year highlights some remarkable initiatives and individuals who embody our commitment to transforming lives through education.
In August, we were thrilled to open our Dreamscape Learn lab, a cutting-edge venture that brings virtual reality into the classroom. This immersive technology is revolutionizing the way our students learn, allowing them to engage with educational content in dynamic and interactive ways. By pioneering this innovative approach, we are not only enhancing the learning experience but also setting a new standard for educational excellence.
In this issue, you’ll get an in-depth look at how this incredible technology is revolutionizing the educational experience for our students. You’ll also get to know Professor Torey Arnold, one of the faculty members who is on the front lines of integrating VR into our curriculum.
In addition, our new AgTEC certificate program is breaking down barriers for current agricultural workers. Through an innovative Competency-Based Education (CBE) model, students can now demonstrate their expertise and learn new technologies without the constraints of traditional credit-hour modalities. This flexible approach empowers them to advance their careers and improve their lives at their own pace, and the curriculum has been developed in direct response to industry needs.
Lastly, as we recognize Hispanic Heritage Month, which begins on Sept. 15, we celebrate the rich cultural and professional contributions that enrich our community. This issue features the inspiring story of athletics counselor and alumnus Pablo Gutierrez, whose remarkable journey of family and faith has led him to a rewarding career helping students succeed. Pablo truly embodies the supportive and inclusive environment we strive to create on our campus, and we are proud to share his story with you today.
Innovation is not just about technology or new programs; it’s about the people who work tirelessly to drive change and make a difference for our students. Whether through advanced learning platforms, transformative educational models, or personal journeys of resilience, we are collectively shaping a brighter future.
Let’s embrace this new academic year with enthusiasm and a shared commitment to innovation, inclusivity, and excellence. Together, we will continue to break new ground and support one another in all our endeavors.
Sincerely,
Chris Vitelli, Ed.D. Superintendent/President
