Foreword

“As the academic year draws to a close, May offers us a powerful moment to reflect, recognize, and rejoice.”
Dear Merced College Colleagues,
As the academic year draws to a close, May offers us a powerful moment to reflect, recognize, and rejoice.
At Merced College, the highlight of this season is undoubtedly commencement. On May 22 in Los Banos and May 23 in Merced, we will celebrate the achievements of our graduating students—individuals who have overcome obstacles and embraced opportunity to become our next generation of scholars, professionals, and community leaders. Their stories are a testament to perseverance, and we are proud to stand with them as they take their next steps forward.
This issue of the Blue Devil’s Advocate is filled with that same spirit of determination and growth. You’ll meet graduates who have balanced parenting with coursework, including one who took on the role of parent to her younger siblings after the loss of her mother. You'll also hear from student workers and our student trustee, whose service to our campus has been just as transformative as their academic studies. Their voices represent the best of what Merced College fosters—not just academic excellence, but personal resilience and purpose.
May is also National Foster Care Month, and we are proud to shine a light on the work of our NextUp Center. The center supports current and former foster youth—students who are often navigating higher education without the safety net many others rely on. Their success stories, too, are remarkable. They remind us of the power of support, community, and the belief that all students deserve a path to a brighter future.
And as we observe Asian American and Pacific Islander (AAPI) Heritage Month, we celebrate the contributions of AAPI individuals across our college community. This month’s Q&A with Mayumi Wood highlights not only her dedication to our international students, but also the lasting impact of shared cultural experience and empathy. Her story reflects the broader mission of Merced College to embrace diversity, build bridges, and create a welcoming environment for all.
Whether you are graduating, continuing your studies, or supporting our students from behind the scenes—thank you. It is your collective effort that makes Merced College a place where all students can thrive.
Sincerely,

Chris Vitelli, Ed.D. Superintendent/President
