Jenelle Batchelor
Assistant Director of Events & Operations
Welcome, Jenelle
What is your role at Merced College?
Events and Operations falls under the umbrella of the Facilities & Capital Projects department, overseeing over 421,000 assignable square feet. Our goal is to deliver high-quality custodial, groundskeeping, and events services to both the college and the wider community. At the helm of this dynamic operation, I have the privilege of guiding a dedicated team of 39 classified professionals. This team serves as the backbone and heart of our district, offering support ranging from room bookings to the seamless execution of major events such as commencement and community collaborations.
What part of your job do you enjoy most?
My favorite part of the job is the tangible impact our department has in supporting students, staff, and faculty. I love to be behind the scenes, supporting a safe and inclusive environment while collaborating with departments district-wide to make dreams become a reality from daily facility use to commencement and championship athletics. My peers play a huge role in this, as they take teamwork and dedication to the limit. I truly appreciate the camaraderie, integrity, and grace we share for each other.
Tell us about yourself. What brought you to Merced College?
My career path has spanned from support staff and event planning to management positions, as well as entrepreneurship with the establishment of a heavy-duty equipment company. While those experiences were valuable and enriching, my heart remained connected to higher education after my own journey as a first-generation college student navigating a career and three children as a single mom.
When the opportunity arose to join this team, I knew it was the perfect fit. The culture, the leadership, and most importantly the students resonate deeply with me. It feels like coming home, and I am eager to contribute my skills and passion to continue building a vibrant, innovative, empowering college experience where all students can thrive.
How would you describe what it’s like preparing for commencement?
Preparing for commencement is a collaborative effort across all departments, where we embrace the opportunity to share our skills and expertise. While each department may take a turn leading, our main focus is always on keeping the students center stage. I enjoy the process, and the focus on adapting, staying calm, and celebrating the culmination of another year of students achieving their dreams. It’s a privilege to play a part in coordinating and supporting hundreds of students in their successes, culminating in the grand finale of commencement!
What do you like to do outside of work?
Quality time is important to me and I’ll most likely be found with my family when I’m not working. We can be found on the lake wake-surfing, camping (more like glamping), working out, or traveling and exploring this beautiful world around us with intention, authenticity, and a dash of grace thrown in for good measure!
