Dee Sigismond
Acting Vice President of Instruction
Welcome, Dee
What is your role at Merced College?
I started my career at Merced College in 2005 as the first chemistry professor at the Los Banos Campus. I served in that role for 14 years and watched the program grow in students and course offerings. During my time in Los Banos, I also served as the Academic Senate President, faculty lead, FLEX coordinator, Staff Development Coordinator, and Guided Pathways Co-chair. In 2021, I began working as the Dean of Institutional Effectiveness at the Merced Campus. At that time, the Office of Institutional Effectiveness included two senior researchers and the dean, but since then we have added an Academic Support Specialist, a Director of Grants Development, a Program Assistant, and most recently a Data Visualization Analyst. I am now serving as the Acting Vice President of Instruction.
What part of your job do you enjoy most?
The part of my job that I like most is the people I work with. Merced College is truly like a family to me. I had left Merced College for a couple of years, and on the first day I stepped back on campus, I felt like I was home again.
Tell us about yourself. What brought you to Merced College?
During graduate school, I discovered that I enjoyed teaching far more than research. Because I did enjoy teaching, I knew I wanted to teach at a community college instead of a university, because I wanted to be able to work closely with students and not have to do research. The position at the Los Banos Campus allowed me to develop a Chemistry program that previously had not existed. It was a wonderful opportunity to make a difference for the college, and more importantly, for students in the Los Banos area.
What do you like to do outside of work?
I like to spend time with my family and friends. My husband and I, along with our two puppies, like to go camping. I enjoy spending time in my craft room, using my Cricut or sewing machine. Being creative helps get me out of my head.
In celebration of Women’s History Month, what message would you share with young women who are early in their careers or aspiring to leadership roles?
I would say know your worth and believe in yourself. Don’t let anyone change who you are. You are already amazing! Change only for you. Sometimes what you want isn’t easy and doesn’t always happen on your timeline. Be patient, and use all your experiences as opportunities for growth. For both the Chemistry Professor position and the Dean of Institutional Effectiveness position I have held at Merced College, I had to apply multiple times before I was offered the positions. I never gave up on what I wanted and continued to work to develop my skills to make me a more qualified candidate. I also want to share that surrounding yourself with a supportive group of women will be invaluable to you through the years. They will be there for you in the good and bad times.
How do you balance the responsibilities of your leadership role with your personal life, and what advice would you give to other women seeking to do the same?
This is something I, and many women in leadership, struggle with. Having a good work-life balance is very important and something that we should all strive to do. I would advise women to recognize that they are worth it. Taking time for yourself is something we all deserve and helps keep us from burning out. I often make sure I have scheduled plans on the weekend so that working on a weekend is not an option. I am a work in progress with this and will keep improving in this area.
