“In this issue, we celebrate the incredible women of Merced College—the leaders, educators, students, and alumnae who are shaping the future.”
Foreword
Dear Merced College Colleagues, As we step into the heart of Women’s History Month, it is my distinct pleasure to present this issue of the Blue Devil’s Advocate, celebrating the inspiring women whose achievements and journeys paint a picture of resilience, leadership, and innovation within and beyond the walls of Merced College. In this special issue, we spotlight the remarkable contributions of women in the agricultural sector, a field as challenging as it is critical to our everyday lives. We share the inspiring stories of four Merced College alumnae who have branched out into various ag-related careers, from veterinary science to agribusiness, research, teaching, and ag finance. Our ag students are fortunate to be mentored by two of our distinguished faculty members, Nikki Maddux and Kim Donaher, who have been pioneers and leaders in guiding our institution and our region toward a brighter and more inclusive future in agriculture. Next, we shine a light on our amazing Theater department with “Gloria: A Life,” a dynamic production that pays tribute to the life and legacy of feminist icon Gloria Steinem. With an all-female cast, led by Director and Professor Lauren McCue-Bryx, the play embodies the strength and diversity of women’s voices and the struggles women have endured and continue to endure even today. I encourage every one of you to experience this powerful production, which promises to be not just an evening of entertainment but a profound journey through the challenges and triumphs that have shaped women’s history. This month’s issue also features a profile of alumna Marissa Luna Lopez, whose life and career in education is a narrative of finding a sense of home in the calling of teaching and mentorship. And lastly, we honor Dee Sigismond, a distinguished leader at Merced College whose insights remind us that leadership is not just about reaching the top, but lifting others as we climb. As you delve into this issue, let us celebrate the incredible women of Merced College—the leaders, educators, students, and alumnae who are shaping the future. Their stories are a testament to the enduring strength and potential of women to lead, to inspire, and to transform the world around us, and a reminder of the endless possibilities that unfold when we support and uplift one another. Sincerely,
Chris Vitelli, Ed.D. Superintendent/President
