“As we delve into this month’s celebrations and activities, let us all renew our commitment to understanding and appreciating the depth and breadth of Black history.”
Foreword
Dear Merced College Colleagues, Black History Month ushers in a time of reflection and celebration of the profound impact and achievements of Black Americans in our nation’s past, present and future. At Merced College, we take pride in our commitment to fostering an inclusive and supportive environment where diversity is not just acknowledged but celebrated. This commitment is at the heart of our mission, as we continually strive to provide equitable opportunities and a welcoming atmosphere for all students, faculty, and classified professionals, regardless of their background. In this special Black History Month issue of the Blue Devil's Advocate, we are excited to showcase stories that highlight the richness of Black culture and the significant roles Black students, faculty, and alumni play in our college and community. We spotlight programs like Umoja and A2MEND, which are pivotal in supporting the academic and leadership development of our Black students. You’ll meet talented Professor Orlando Taylor, whose work as an educator and a poet enrich our community immensely, and dedicated chemistry Professor Denisha Dawson. Also featured in this issue is our Black Student Union, which is growing in its reach and impact and stands as a testament to the power of student leadership and its ability to effect positive change, and distinguished alumna Jordan Pierce, who exemplifies leadership and mentorship while serving as the girls basketball coach at Stone Ridge Christian High School and an assistant coach for the Merced College women’s team. As we delve into this month’s celebrations and activities, let us all renew our commitment to understanding and appreciating the depth and breadth of Black history. Let’s continue to build a college community that not only acknowledges but actively champions diversity, equity, and inclusion for all. Thank you for joining us in this important observance and for your ongoing support in making Merced College a place where every individual can thrive and contribute their unique perspectives and talents. Sincerely,
Chris Vitelli, Ed.D. Superintendent/President
